The Juilliard School is presenting VINCENT PERSICHETTI (1915-1987) – A Centennial Tribute on Tuesday, October 20, 2015. There will be a pre-concert panel at 7:00 pm followed by a concert of music by Vincent Persichetti at 8:00 pm. Both events will take place in Paul Hall. He encountered the French composer and teacher Nadia Boulanger, and the rest, as they say, is history. Fifty-five years later, Larry Alan Smith would follow in the footsteps of Aaron Copland, Virgil Thomson, Walter Poston, David Diamond, Philip Glass and countless other American composers by studying with Nadia Boulanger. This class will explore Boulanger’s extraordinary life and family, her impact on American music and her ground-breaking performances as a female conductor. Dr. Smith will share his personal experiences, and he will also speak about music education in France and the United States.

Larry Alan Smith will present a lecture for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Virginia. The lecture is entitled Programming a Summer Music Festival: Letting One's Imagination Run Wild.
Using the upcoming 2010 Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy as a case study, Dr. Smith will talk about his approach to programming from conception to implementation. The theme for 2010 is Vienna, and the lecture will demonstrate how music, dance, film, theatre and many other elements can be combined to create a comprehensive regional festival with more than 200 events.
